Understanding and engineering cyanobacteria
We study photosynthetic microorganisms that grow on sunlight and CO₂, and develop them into sustainable cell factories. Part of Microbial Chemistry at the Department of Chemistry – Ångström Laboratory, Uppsala University.
Explore our researchThe research in the Miao group focuses on understanding and engineering cyanobacteria, photosynthetic microorganisms that use sunlight and carbon dioxide to support their growth.
Cyanobacteria have enormous potential as sustainable cell factories because they can convert solar energy and CO₂ directly into biomass and useful products. We combine several approaches to understand how these organisms work and to develop new applications in sustainable biotechnology.
In the Eco-Nfix project we engineer nitrogen fixation into a fast-growing cyanobacterium, aiming for sustainable biofertilizer production.
Our approaches
We are part of the Next-Generation Nordic Network for Plant and Algal Sugars, funded by NordForsk.
Rui received a FORMAS career grant for early-career researchers to engineer nitrogen fixation in a fast-growing cyanobacterium for sustainable biofertilizer production.
New funding from the Novo Nordisk Foundation for developing sustainable biofertilizer production via high-throughput protein engineering in cyanobacteria, plus a STINT mobility grant for internationalisation.
